intermissions
Teevee watching nights Monday and scififantasy have breaks in the program so you can stand up, strech, go pee, drink water.
can I contribute?
Sure! But the program directrix or director has final say. What we're looking for:
- Duration: five minutes. If the directrix has to speed up or slow down your video to fit 300 seconds, it might look like ass.
- Gentle motion. We're making screensavers here for people's eyebals. No flashing lights or flickering.
- Gentle sound. We're making screensavers here for people's ears. Gentle music, no crescendos, no (engaging) talking.
- Calming visuals. Doesn't have to be boring, and you can do better than a still-image slideshow.
- A visual message identifying it as an intermission. A visual marker for each minute elapsed is a nice-to-have.
Ultimately the intermission will be pleasant to look at but ignorable, something in the background while people are doing self-care between performances. Something that can be ignored while talking with other people in the audience about what they just saw. Something people can tune-out while the show waits for the audience to come back, but still there as an implicit sign the show is still going on.
Technical notes from Mozai:
- Sountrack music works because it's designed to be in the background, not distracting from some other story. "I liek Bandcamp for finding music. Incompetech is there if I ever get desperate."
- On Linux, my frequently used tools were `youtube-dl`, `audacity` and `openshot` "I am no longer friends with Openshot, KDEnlive is my friend now."
- video: 1280x720 25fps, audio: 128kb/s, but it will be downmixed from this when it is streamed. "The stream is best when it's 1024kbit/s
- if the ending/finale is important, add 1-2s of freeze-frame or black screen to eat the buffer since video player clients may truncate the end to stay in-synch with the server (VLC does this too).
