i tried to determine whether you can actually make music with microtones or if it's just a way to sound out of tune on every note.
i think there's something to it. this music is very pretty, but i still cringe whenever there's a certain type of dissonance.
what i'm looking for is microtonal shifts between chords or notes which actually sound like part of a proper chord progression or melody. i think i can hear it in the shifting of the chords in the song above, and they're quite beatuful. the ones that aren't dissonant are, at least.
the instrument is called the "Lumatone". here's a tutorial on how one person uses it. the tutorial shows how polychromatic music can be played. that is, music made up of multiple chromatic scales tuned to different pitches.
Try it yourself!
there's an online microtonal synth you can play yourself with your computer keyboard. i've been having some fun with it.

it's pretty confusing to orient yourself with it, but there's tooltips if you hover over any of the settings, so it's not that bad.
